Welcome to the Wharton Club of Charlotte

The Wharton Club of Charlotte
Anthony Hamilton Russell (WG89) on his Estate

2009 Year End Social

Enjoy the company of your fellow Club members and taste outstanding wines grown on the estate of a Wharton Alumnus at the southernmost tip of Africa.

Join your fellow Wharton Charlotte Club Members and their spouses/significant others as we bid farewell to an excellent year for the Charlotte Club.

At the event we will be tasting the wines prouced by Anthony Hamilton Russell (WG 89) on his Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (Heaven and Earth Valley for those who do not speak Afrikaans). The terroir on this estate has allowed Anthony to produce award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. We will also taste a Pinotage (a varietal particular to South Africa) and a Sauvignon Blanc.

Heavy Hors d'ouvres will be served.

The event will be held at Total Wine, a company that was founded by another Wharton graduate, David Trone. Total Wine will have their experts on hand to comment on the wines for the serious connoisseurs in the club. A short DVD with a greeting and introduction to the wines featuring Anthony Hamilton Russell will be shown.

One of each of the 4 varietals that will be tasted will be given away as a door prize. You have to be a member of the Club to be eligible to for this drawing so now is the perfect time to join or renew your membership or give a gift of membership to a fellow Wharton or Penn Alum. Total Wine will also be offering special discounts for those attending.

Late Breaking News in a letter to us from the Hamilton Russells:

Hamilton Russell Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir included on the 2009 Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of the year.

Our Pinot noir came in at number 52 and was the only South African wine on the list – which was chosen from the more than 17,000 wines reviewed during the course of the year. The selection is based on factors such as quality, value and excitement. We were one of only 7 Pinot noirs chosen for the Top 100.

Senior Editor, James Molesworth described our 2007 as follows: “Bold, aromatic and ripe, but very elegant, with racy acidity providing the ground wire for the rich black cherry, bramble, incense and sweet earth notes, followed by a long, multifaceted finish.”

Wine writer, Jonathan Ray, chose this same vintage for inclusion on his list - 10 of the best South African wines - for the Daily Telegraph – the only Pinot noir on his list.

Included in our tasting:

  • Hamilton Russell Vineyards 2007 Pinot Noir
  • Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 2008,
  • Southern Right Pinotage 2007
  • Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc 2009
